How to Install AM2R

(Another Metroid 2 Remake)

AM2R is a fanmade remake of the original Metroid 2 for the Gameboy. Here I will guide you on how I got a native Linux port running on my Steam Deck. First, you’ll need to switch over to Desktop mode. There, you need to install AM2RLauncher from Discover, and download AM2R v1.1 from the Internet Archive.

Install AM2RLauncher from Discover

Download AM2R v1.1 from Internet Archive

Now you’ll run AM2RLauncher, following the prompts.

Run AM2RLauncher

Click "Download"
First, click “Download”
Hurry up and wait
Wait while it downloads…
Click to navigate to AM2R_1.1.zip
Now install the game
Now install
If you want you can stop here...
…if you don’t mind always running the launcher in Desktop mode.

You can now play AM2R on your Deck, but if you want a seemless experience, there’s a few more steps.

Find the AppImage file that you created with AM2RLauncher

The easy way to do this didn’t work for me on the Deck, but it did on my laptop running Manjaro, so go ahead and try it.

If that didn't work...
I did the hard part for you and found where it’s hiding. (Click image to expand.)

In Linux, the period in .var means it’s a hidden folder, so you may need to make hidden folders visible

Now that you know where the actual game executable is, you can add it to Steam as a Non-Steam game. (If you need help to do that, click on Navi below.)

You can now play AM2R from Game mode. You might want to add custom artwork to make it look pretty. SteamGridDB.com is a pretty good resource.
